Can You Fail a Drug Test Due to CBD?

While most CBD products contain very little THC, some experts have reported in certain cases that CBD can accidentally cause you to fail drug tests. While rare, these particular circumstances usually occur for chronic CBD users due to a slow buildup of trace amounts of THC.

CBD & Drug Tests

Does CBD show up on a drug test? Technically no, this is due to the fact that your typical, work-related drug test does not screen for CBD. According to Leafly, employees won’t face a CBD drug test, but rather a routine drug test where you could potentially fail for any residual THC leftover from a CBD product in your system. You won’t be drug tested for CBD, you’ll be drug tested for THC.

Will CBD edibles show on a drug test? Again, CBD will not show up on any drug test that isn’t explicitly screening for it. Any CBD-infused product, so long as it doesn’t contain any THC, will not affect a drug test.

Most drug tests start by employers collecting and sending off samples (usually urine) to drug testing companies who run them through a machine that measures trace chemicals in the liquid. Technicians then look for evidence of a byproduct of THC. Also according to Leafly, CBD from federally legal hemp can still consist of up to 0.3% THC. If you ingest extremely high doses of CBD (in the thousands of milligrams per day) from federally legal hemp oil, you may also be ingesting at least 1 mg of THC. You can avoid accidental THC exposure by using state-licensed and tested CBD products like our CBD infused chewing gum and CBD mints

How to Choose the Right CBD Products

CBD normally contains extremely trace amounts of THC, well below an amount that would be tested for on a typical drug test. Most CBD active ingredients sold today have the THC scientifically removed during the extraction process. According to Healthline, there’s a few steps you can take to ensure that you won’t accidentally test positive for THC:

  • Study the product information

After you’ve researched the company you’re purchasing a CBD product from, make sure to find out whether the product comes from hemp or marijuana. Then, find out whether the CBD is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or pure CBD isolate. It’s also a good idea to look at the full ingredient list, read reviews, and find out where hemp-derived CBD products come from.

  • Choose products that list the amount of CBD

When consuming any type of CBD, it’s always a good move to learn the exact concentration of CBD per dose. Keep in mind that this may vary according to what kind of product it is.

  • Conduct research before buying

When trying a new CBD product, it’s best to look for the following terms: USDA-certified organic, CO2-extracted, decarboxylated, lab-tested, no additives, pesticide- or herbicide-free, no preservatives, and solvent-free. To make sure these claims are true, search for any available lab test results associated with a given manufacturer.
