What is CBD

What is CBD?

What is Hemp

So; What is CBD? CBD is short for Cannabidiol. It might be one of the most important chemicals extracted from the hemp plant. CBD oil has many medicinal purposes.  Cannabidiol harvested from cannabis sativa or indica strains of the hemp plant produce a high-CBD, low-THC flower. Therefore, that flower offers numerous pain relief benefits, and without experiencing psychoactive effects. In short, CBD is a medicinal oil extracted from the leaves, stalks, and flower buds of hemp plants. And, this CBD oil can be consumed via: smoke, vapor, pills, chewable, or as prescription liquids.

Unfortunately, CBD, has been misunderstood, and wrongly attacked, for much of its life. Recently, the substance has received substantial praise, due largely in part to its legalization under the 2018 Farm Bill. Furthermore, this Bill increased accessibility and brought the question of “what is CBD?” to mainstream. While we still have a lot to learn, the benefits are already widely documented. Understanding what CBD is, and why it’s so beneficial, it’s first important to understand where it comes from.

What is Hemp?

To better understand what Cannabidiol is; let’s take a look at hemp. The industrial hemp plant is a distant relative of cannabis Sativa, as a result, very genetically different from the marijuana plant. It produces compounds that have extremely low levels of THC. Additionally, THC is the psychoactive ingredient typically found within marijuana, and thus does not give users any “high”. Furthermore, the oil derived from industrial hemp is, instead, loaded with high levels of Cannabidiol, better known as CBD.

The all-natural plant, “hemp” grows extremely quickly, because it does not require pesticide treatment, its nature is environmentally beneficial. None the less, hemp oil isn’t the only valuable aspect this plant provides either. Similarly its stalks, seeds, and flowers are increasingly popular materials because they are used in a number of different industries. Surprisingly, these industries include health, food, textiles, construction, and organic beauty products.

In 2018, the U.S. Farm Bill formally – and legally – distinguished industrial hemp from marijuana. Therefore understanding “what is CBD” you soon learn that Cannabidiol products sourced from industrial hemp are legal, and can be shipped to all fifty states.

What Is the Difference Between CBD vs. THC?

The most important distinction between these two substances is that CBD (Cannabidiol) oils are not psychoactive because hemp plants contain extremely low THC levels. More scientifically, the two derivatives act upon different cannabinoid receptors when introduced into the human body. THC targets one specific receptor, CB1, that’s located inside the brain, hence the feelings of psycho-activity produced by marijuana. Conversely, Cannabidiol has zero interaction with any brain receptors. And instead primarily act upon cells found throughout the immune system or the central nervous system.

These are two very different chemical compounds. THC may provide certain health benefits in states where it is a medically controlled compound. Because of the absence of psycho-activity with Cannabidiol use, it becomes an extremely vital difference. It is this key distinction that has led to Cannabidiol being legalized through state pilot programs under the 2014 and 2018 U.S. Farm Bills. We hope this short introduction clarifies the “What is CBD?” question many people have.
