A CBD Beginner’s Guide
Are you curious about what CBD is, how it works? And what its benefits are but aren’t sure where to look? This CBD beginner’s guide is a great place to start.
As you know CBD is a relatively new alternative health product. Hence, CBD has created an enormous impact in the last couple of years following the passage of the Farm Bill. As the national manufacturing of industrial hemp is now permitted, numerous products that contain CBD have hit the market. And, with little previous research and lack of FDA approval, there are many questions still being asked about the potential CBD has and how it can affect our lives.
We’ll be covering all that and more. Including some critical CBD tips. The truth about CBD when it comes to traveling. And the difference between CBD vs. THC—among other need-to-know essentials.
The Potential Benefits of CBD
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of more than 100 different chemical compounds harvested from hemp plants. Unlike THC, which is the active ingredient found in marijuana, CBD doesn’t make users feel “high,”. But instead promotes more subtle psychoactive and physical benefits that may not be immediately obvious.
CBD works with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system. Which is a complex cell-signaling system first discovered by scientists in the 1990s. This cell-signaling system of balance, is also known as homeostasis. It’s involved in processes like mood, memory, sleep, and pain relief, among others.
There are many purported benefits of CBD oil, much of which is supported by existing clinical studies. These include:
- Support with pain relief
- Reductions in anxiety and depression
- Help with skin issues, particularly inflammation and acne
- Sleep support
In addition, there is some evidence of CBD’s neuro- and cardioprotective properties. Of course, CBD isn’t a miracle cure-all, and we still have a lot to learn. However, early reports suggest that CBD is incredibly promising. Especially when it comes to providing an alternative method for treating common ailments without turning to pharmaceuticals.
The surge in CBD popularity
Considering the benefits of CBD, it’s probably not surprising that it has become increasingly popular. Google searches on the topic have skyrocketed in less than a decade. And it’s becoming more acceptable on the consumer market—even among professional athletic associations.
The fast-growing CBD market shows no sign of slowing down. Instead it’s booming with new products and new ways to make CBD part of a daily routine. Among the many innovations include edible products like CBD Mints and CBD Gum. These products offer a novel consumption method that bypasses the digestive system to provide more active CBD per dose.
The Best Ways to Take CBD
There are a lot of different CBD products out there. While there is no single best way to take CBD. There are things to know that can help you make the decision for your needs and preferences.
- CBD oils: This type of CBD is consumed sublingually, meaning it’s applied under the tongue. And held for a minute or so before swallowing. Benefits of CBD oil are that it’s convenient and discrete, however not everyone likes the taste.
- CBD edibles: Edibles might be the easiest—and most convenient—way to consume CBD. But those that you chew and swallow lose bioavailability after going through your digestive tract and metabolism. Better alternatives for oral consumption are CBD Mints and Gum. They dissolve in your mouth and allow CBD to be absorbed through your mucus glands.
- CBD capsules: CBD capsules are a super quick way to consume CBD. They’re also flavorless, though the CBD must go through the digestive system before it hits the bloodstream.
- CBD vapes: Vaping is a popular way to consume CBD, but it’s not necessarily the most effective. That being said, vaping does help speed up the process of absorption. And vapes are available in a wide range of flavors.
- CBD topicals: CBD topicals are a good choice for targeted pain relief or muscle soreness. They don’t work as well for CBD’s other benefits, but can be used in conjunction if preferred.
So, what should you try? Oral consumption, especially through gums and mints, is the fastest way to feel relief. And it leaves you with more active CBD. Also because they’re pre-dosed, it’s easy to know exactly how much you’re getting. And to safely enhance your dosage if needed.
CBD for Pain Relief
Curious about how CBD helps pain? Pain relief is one of CBD’s most widely known benefits. Benefits include minor but invasive ailments like muscle pain, joint aches, and headaches.
CBD’s use as a pain reliever comes down to its ability to address both symptoms and root causes of pain. These include, inflammation and general discomfort. While it’s not comparable to prescription pain relievers, it is safe. And, for many people, effective at combating common pain issues and reducing discomfort during and after athletic activities. It can also help with chronic pains that accompany aging.
Traveling with CBD
It’s common for people to have questions about whether or not it’s okay to travel with CBD.
The good news is that CBD is legal in the U.S. so long as a product does not contain more than the allowed 0.3% of THC. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, which made CBD legal on a federal level, meaning it can be transported between states.
Of course, there are some guidelines to know about, including the THC limit in CBD products. And basic requirements around volume. Some additional tips for easing travel with CBD include:
- Make sure the product label is clear and obvious
- Print out the product’s lab report and have it available
- If concerned, travel with a THC-free CBD product
You can carry CBD in your carry-on or checked luggage and do not have to notify the TSA. But if they ask, be prepared to be honest and have information on hand that supports the product’s legality.
Important to note is the difference between marijuana and CBD and how that applies. Most commercial CBD comes from the hemp plant and contains no or very little THC. Unless medically required, you cannot travel with marijuana or CBD with high levels of THC.
If you have more questions, we encourage you to contact your departure and arrival airport or visit the TSA website.
