As research continues to showcase new and exciting developments of CBD, the increasingly common question, “does CBD interact with other medications?” may seem to have an updated and plausible answer. Therefore we will discuss CBD interactions.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is quickly making a name for itself in the medicinal world. such as oils, gummies, creams, and other products being produced on a global scale. With it comes a number of potential benefits, both physically and mentally, on the mind and body. Still, the increasing reliability of CBD and its benefits shouldn’t simply come without proper precautions. Just like any other medication or supplement you’d take. One of the major precautions to consider before CBD use is the simple question: “Does CBD oil interact with any medications?”. Here’s what we know so far, and what to look out for when attempting to take CBD in addition to prescription medications.

Does CBD Oil Interact with Any Medications?

Perhaps the most direct source of information regarding a potential interaction with CBD and medications is from studies conducted on the only FDA-approved CBD product, Epidiolex, which is used to treat rare forms of epilepsy. Studies have found that Epidiolex increases blood levels of the blood thinner, Warfarin, by around 30%, which raises the risk of bleeding. Epidiolex is also said to interact with other epilepsy medications.

However, based on what we currently know about the way CBD metabolizes, researchers don’t expect significant drug interactions with many common medications. As well as most nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or (NSAIDs). An area researchers are looking to focus more closely on is the correlation between CBD and medications for liver problems.

Types of Potential Drug Interactions With CBD

Speaking of the liver, there is in fact a potential interaction that can be had between multiple medications and CBD. And much of this comes down to the way that both the medications, as well as cannabidiol, are broken down by liver enzymes, known as CYP450.

Basically, CBD inhibits some of the enzymes in this family. As a result, the breaking down of certain drugs and medications happens significantly slower. This has the potential to increase side effects unless a doctor alters the dosage. Meanwhile, CBD also induces other enzymes in the family. Which instead speeds the breakdown process of certain drugs so they may potentially be less effective unless the dose is increased.

CBD Drug Interactions List

Some medications and drugs that may have increased side effects with CBD include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Medications that can cause drowsiness
  • Heart medications
  • Macrolide antibiotics

To determine the exact response to using CBD with other medications, it’s always best to seek professional opinion. You should always be cautious and consult with your doctor before using any CBD product alongside these types of medications.
